RefillMyBottle App and Pesona's commitment to change on Gili Trawangan
For the last 2 years, Pesona Beach Resort has been on a mission to make our business “greener.” This is not a green-washing marketing plan, but an effort to be good neighbors and island residents. Gili Trawangan has been struggling with waste management issues for more than a decade, and even with the tremendous efforts of the Gili Eco Trust and the new PT Sama Sama Gili rubbish and recycling collection agency, there is simply too much waste being produced.
One of the first steps we decided to take was eliminating plastic water bottles from the premises. We purchase gallons of water which are used in dispensers around the resort. Each room has upcycled glass bottles for guests, and we offer free refills for life with the purchase of a reusable metal bottle cheerfully adorned with our logo and the logo of Dive Central Gili.
The Pesona restaurant also serves water for guests in glass bottles and carafes. Initially we worried about customers complaints but the feedback has been nothing but positive! We are so pleased that our guests feel the same way we do about taking the right steps towards single-use plastic reduction.
Luckily, this trend is also taking off across the Gili islands and in Bali. Travelers with their own bottles can now refill them at many hotels, restaurants, dive shops and even local establishments like warungs. What used to be a game of asking around and trying to remember where you last got a refill, has now been replaced by a wonderful new app; RefillMyBottle. Available for both Android and IPhone users, you can use the location feature to find which businesses close to you offer paid or free refills, and even plan your next destination based on the ease of access to refill-friendly businesses.
A labor of love that was initiated by BGreener members, this platform has now expanded to include many places in Indonesia as well as abroad in other Asian countries like Thailand and Vietnam. There are facebook communities based around the members, and meetups that you can take part in to get more businesses to join the movement.
Businesses who participate display this logo to signify they are a part of the RefillMyBottle community. Look out for this photo as you jalan-jalan (walk) around our island and others.
