6 Ways to Reduce Waste on Gili
The Gili islands are the ideal vacation spot for someone looking for beautiful beaches and a taste of the island life. Here on Gili Trawangan we are devoted to keeping Gili clean and saving its resources. Being environmentally conscious might not be a priority as you stay in Gili for only a few days, but even you can make a difference! Some tips to create less waste include…
1. DITCH THE STRAW
The problem with plastic straws is that it does not biodegrade, which means it can stay on the planet for up to 200 years or it’s consumed by sea animals! We’re proud to say we are a straw free resort, but many bars and restaurants around the island are not straw free. Make sure to request “no straw” wherever you order a drink! If you absolutely need one, there are other options like reusable glass or metal straws or Insta-worthy bamboo straws that look perfect inside a coconut. Learn more about the cause at http://thelastplasticstraw.org/about-us/
2. USE YOUR BAGS MORE THAN ONCE
Using one bag instead of several smaller (mostly plastic) bags means you’ll help save our beaches by reducing plastic rubbish that sometimes gets carried by the wind. There are shops all around Gili selling cute bags that can be used for everyday activities like food shopping, laundry, or to hold your things while you ride your bike. Buying from these local businesses means you’re also supporting the local economy. It’s a win-win.
3. REFILL YOUR WATER BOTTLES
Gili T has come together to reduce waste by providing water refill stations (sometimes free, sometimes for a small fee) for anyone with a water bottle. You don’t need a fancy water bottle to participate - just use your plastic Narmada water bottle you can buy at any convenience store and reuse and refill your bottle. Gili Eco Trust has created a map of where to find all the water refill stations on the island!
4. USE THE BUM GUN
Have you seen the water hoses in all the bathrooms around the island? That’s a bum gun, and yes it’s used for what you think! Flushing toilet paper down the toilet can block the septic system and cause grey water to spill everywhere. You’ll see signs in every bathroom about the consequences of using toilet paper so do your part and use the bum gun!
5. ATTEND A FRIDAY BEACH CLEAN UP
The words “clean up” might not sound like something you’d like to do during your holiday, but the aqua blue waters and clean beaches that make Gili beautiful are not possible without these beach cleanups. Devoting a few hours of your time to cleaning the beach during sunset is a way to be a sustainable tourist and keep the beaches of Gili beautiful.
6. GLASS CUPS > PLASTIC CUPS:
Take the time to enjoy your drink and stay where you are with a glass cup rather than leave and walk around with a plastic one. After throwing your cup away, it could blow onto the beach and into the ocean, where it will remain for years. If you can drink out of a coconut… even better!
